Our Story

After moving here in 2004 Justin and I have developed a love for Cañon City. We moved here for the wealth of outdoor activities and the small town feel. We decided to open River Lotus Yoga because we saw a need in Cañon City. The Arkansas River is a beautiful and powerful part of our town, so what better to name our business after? Building community here is a big part of our motivation; creating a space for people to practice yoga. We want to help Cañon City see the many benefits of Yoga. We have seen the positive effects it has on our own lives, and we want to share that with all of you! We are located at 504 Main Street, Suite E in Canon City, Colorado. The building is historic and has a wonderful look and feel.  Come visit us for a class!

Alison Gromme  (RYT 200)

IMG_20150121_090044686_HDRAlison has long nurtured a deep connection to nature and outdoor activities, first with her family in mountains outside of Boulder, Colorado, and later on the family farm in Wisconsin where her father practiced conservation of land providing open water for migrating water fowl, and farmland converted to tree plantation to preserve virgin forest. Alison first shared her love of the out of doors as a camp counselor in northern Michigan leading backpacking, camping, and canoeing trips. Drawn back to the mountains of Colorado, Alison continued to explore outdoor adventure, bicycling, backpacking, and skiing while attending college. She holds a BA in Biology from the Colorado College, and she is an experienced ACE certified personal trainer since 2004, and yoga instructor since 2003, becoming a 200 RYT in 2006. In addition, Alison is a Reiki master practitioner, and finds that it flows together nicely with Yogic ideals. She loves sharing, and helping others on their Yoga journey. Alison and her husband Tim continue to enjoy playing in the great outdoors of southern Colorado, mountain biking, snowboarding, motorcycling, hiking,  and running. Together they have grown in the martial arts with Tim teaching Tae Kwon Do, and most recently Krav Maga, cultivating and sharing mind body connection, inner peace, strength, and confidence.

Melanie Feltmate (RYT 200)

Melanie Rainbow (1)Melanie technically found yoga at a young age, as a tiny gymnast. But after a few years, the competition overshadowed the fun. It wasn’t until her early twenties, when she moved to the Caribbean, that she discovered yoga, a pseudo-gymnastics, that was all about personal exploration and silly human tricks, not awards, and she couldn’t get enough. Melanie truly believes in the life-changing effects that yoga can have not only on the body, but on the mind and soul, and she relishes in the moments when her friends and family unwittingly let her engage in conversations about the 8 limbs of yoga. Practicing for just under a decade, Melanie is excited to bring her up-beat energy and supportive attitude to beginning and advanced students alike. If Melanie is not on her mat practicing, you can probably find her paddling down the river, reading tarot cards, mixing essential oil concoctions or doing balancing poses in precarious places in nature.

When she’s not transforming the world one down dog at a time, Jorrey is boating through wild scenic rivers, cresting mountaintops, or dancing through fields of blue columbines. Wherever she is, Jorrey looks at the world through a yogic lens.

Amy genuinely believes music, dance and yoga have been the essence in her life that have helped her flow through her beautiful rivers, streams and valleys of life. She received her 200 RYT from Pranava Yoga in Colorado Springs. Amy inspires to unite with others, connect and grow deeper with herSelf and her practice while beginning a new chapter in life with River Lotus Yoga Studio.

Sherry Johns (RYT 200)

20151020_131714_resized (2)“Yoga has helped me heal, grow and change on many levels and has given me strength, clarity, focus, peace, and flexibility I never knew I could cultivate. I believe yoga is perfect for every body, every age, every size and every ability. I also believe yoga is not a competitive sport nor is it an athletic competition. Yoga means connection – mind, body and spirit, and that’s what happens when you step onto your mat. You begin to connect with yourself, ALL of yourself, in a profound way.”

Sherry recently became a “Yoga for All” certified teacher who infuses body positivity into her yoga classes by using variations, modifications and gentle poses to work with all bodies. She firmly adheres to the Yoga Sutra that states “No effort is ever wasted.” Off the mat, Sherry is a historian, specializing in local history and women’s history. She’s also a published writer, an avid reader of all things enlightening, loves libraries and museums, enjoys Zen-doodling, photo documenting and hiking to historic ruins, and relishes wide open mountain views. Sherry’s goal is to be practicing and teaching yoga at the age of one-hundred and writing local historical fiction.
