Our Story

After moving here in 2004 Justin and I have developed a love for Cañon City. We moved here for the wealth of outdoor activities and the small town feel. We decided to open River Lotus Yoga because we saw a need in Cañon City. The Arkansas River is a beautiful and powerful part of our town, so what better to name our business after? Building community here is a big part of our motivation; creating a space for people to practice yoga. We want to help Cañon City see the many benefits of Yoga. We have seen the positive effects it has on our own lives, and we want to share that with all of you! We are located at 504 Main Street, Suite E in Canon City, Colorado. The building is historic and has a wonderful look and feel.  Come visit us for a class!

Alison Gromme (RYT 200)

IMG_20150121_090044686_HDRAlison has long nurtured a deep connection to nature and outdoor activities, first with her family in mountains outside of Boulder, Colorado, and later on the family farm in Wisconsin where her father practiced conservation of land providing open water for migrating water fowl, and farmland converted to tree plantation to preserve virgin forest. Alison first shared her love of the out of doors as a camp counselor in northern Michigan leading backpacking, camping, and canoeing trips. Drawn back to the mountains of Colorado, Alison continued to explore outdoor adventure, bicycling, backpacking, and skiing while attending college. She holds a BA in Biology from the Colorado College, and she is an experienced ACE certified personal trainer since 2004, and yoga instructor since 2003, becoming a 200 RYT in 2006. In addition, Alison is a Reiki master practitioner, and finds that it flows together nicely with Yogic ideals. Initially attracted to Pranayama as a means to gain freedom from the constriction of asthma, and love of Asana practice, Alison enjoys exploring all of the 8 limb practice of Yoga. She loves sharing, and helping others on their Yoga journey. Alison and her husband Tim continue to enjoy playing in the great outdoors of southern Colorado, mountain biking, snowboarding, motorcycling, hiking,  and running. Sherry Skye Stuart (RYT 200)

“Yoga has given me clarity, strength, and flexibility, as well as healing from trauma. I believe yoga is perfect for every body, age, size and ability. Yoga is not a competitive sport nor is it an athletic competition. We need Gentle yoga and Yin yoga to allow ourselves to find stillness, to release tension and to practice Ahimsa (self-compassion). Yoga means connection – mind, body and soul, and that’s what happens when you step onto your mat. You begin to connect with all of yourself, in a profound way. I firmly adhere to the Yoga Sutra that states ‘No effort is ever wasted’.”
Sherry completed her 200 RYT training from Pranava Yoga in Colorado Springs. She is also a “Yoga for All” certified teacher who infuses body positivity into her yoga classes by using props, variations and modifications. In addition, Sherry is a certified Yin Yoga Level One teacher and a Rieki Level One practitioner.

Off the mat, Sherry is a writer, author, local historian and an avid reader of all things enlightening. She loves libraries and museums, photo documenting and hiking to historic ruins, and relishes wide open mountain views. Her ultimate goal is to be practicing and teaching yoga at the age of one-hundred.

She enjoys outdoor recreation with her family and she is a devoted practitioner who strives to ignite the love for practice in others. As a wife and mother to three boys, Yoga supports her playful spirit and provides daily calm to balance the demands of life. She believes there’s a modification to every pose and every flow to suit each person’s needs. She is completely honored to join the River Lotus Yoga team.

Adrienne Cash (RYT 200)

Adrienne loves yoga… After the birth of one of her children, a friend brought by her first yoga DVD and ice cream. They devoured both. Yoga quickly became a daily practice: DVDs from the library, early morning yoga classes broadcasted on PBS, and a book of postures by a yogi that could contort into very odd, confusing shapes. When she discovered the yoga studio in Canon City, she was nervous to attend. For many years yoga had been just about her – alone – during children’s nap-times, in pajamas pants and on a mat chewed up by cats and dogs.  But through the studio experience, she has not only found community, she has also discovered that yoga philosophy and her faith are highly compatible. Yoga added to every aspect of her life. She wants to share what she’s learned, continue learning, and celebrate others on this journey through life. Yoga allows and encourages her to do that. She believes yoga encourages us all to just be… and see what happens next.

Stefanie Moscato (RYT 200)

Stefanie is a Colorado native, and is proud to be a part of our close knit yoga community. She is a crazy cat lady who loves camping with her family and collecting rocks with her girls. After graduating high school she served five years active duty in the U.S. Army as a military police officer. In 2014 she moved back to Canon City to raise her children. Because of her own birth experiences she was called to do birth and body work. Stefanie is a birth doula, trained through D.O.N.A. International with the Sterling doulas of Aurora Colorado. She is a level 3 reiki practitioner. April of 2019 she proudly completed her 200hr Yoga Teacher Training. Thanks to her yoga teachers enthusiasm and guidance she developed a real love for her practice. Yoga has brought so much joy and balance to stefanie’s life. As a teacher she hopes to give her students everything that’s been given to her. Everybody deserves yoga.

Bryan Fredrickson (RYT 200)

Bryan’s outlook on life is shaped by his interest in both science and philosophy.  Graduating from CU Boulder in 1979 with a Bachelor’s degree in molecular biology, Bryan went on to attend Catholic University Law School in Washington, D.C.  It is during this period in his life that Bryan first came across the Bhagavad Gita.  To this day he considers the Gita one of the more eloquent and demanding spiritual texts ever written and an ever-present companion on his spiritual journey.  Although an Episcopalian, Bryan finds encouragement and meaning from texts across several different religious traditions.  A self-described contemplative, he disappears for a week every year for a silent retreat at a Benedictine monastery in New Mexico.  He also has a love of music whether jazz, classical, chant, big band or classic rock. Bryan considers the practice of yoga to be a challenging training ground for the development of both the human body and the mind.  As a practicing attorney, Bryan has found that a consistent yoga practice creates harmony, balance and contentment in an otherwise stressful world.  Married to Jill since 1981 (also a yoga practitioner), they are blessed with three grown children, Alexa, Jenna and Hale and their cat, Sunshine.

Liz Kirby ( RYT 200)

Liz completed yoga teacher training at River Lotus Yoga in April 2019.  She had not seen becoming a yoga teacher on the horizon, but once the idea landed, it seemed a great opportunity to broaden her learning and to experience it with other people in a new way.  “Yoga is for everybody” and “We are all simply much more human than otherwise” are two deceptively simple pieces of the wisdom gifted from numerous teachers over the years.  Factors such as age, background, and body type do not bar anyone from exploring and making meaningful progress, and  Liz’s practice is aimed at discovering the natural wisdom and benefits of yoga.

Yoga can be challenging, and there is so much to learn!  It is most enjoyable to share the experience with others.  River Lotus is a great yoga community!  People want to grow their skills, keep learning–and have fun together doing it.
John Gordon
John had the good fortune of studying vipassana meditation with Ruth Denison at Dhamma Dena in Joshua Tree, CA. Besides repeated visits to Dhamma Dena, he has sat retreats at Spirit Rock, Wat Metta, Abhayagiri, and Bhavana Society. Besides the singular brilliance of Ruth Denison’s body-centered approach to meditation, John feels heavily indebted to the Thai forest monastic tradition of Buddhism, particularly the lineage of Ajahn Chah. He enjoys sitting almost as much as he likes talking about it. John recently came to Canon City to help his sister farm and remains in order to complete a counseling internship. His greatest accomplishment is having an 18 year-old daughter who still talks to him.
